Er blijven maar weinig originators uit de rootsreggae over die heden ten dage nog op het podium staan. The Wailing Souls vormen daarop een uitzondering. De vocal group werd eind de jaren ’60 opgericht in Trench Town. Zangers Winston ‘Pipe’ Matthews en Lloyd ‘Bread’ McDonald zijn er nu nog altijd bij. Live blijken ze nog steeds bijzonder opwindend en populair.
De bijna vijftigjarige carrière van de band kende heel wat hoogtepunten. Halfweg de jaren ’70 namen The Wailing Souls een resem hits op in de Channel One Studio’s. Single ‘Jah Jah Give Us Life’ behoort tot het collectieve reggaegeheugen. Album ‘Fire House Rock’ uit 1980 is een must have voor elke zichzelf respecterende reggaeliefhebber. ‘All Over The World’ uit 1993 leverde The Wailing Souls voor de eerste keer een nominatie voor een Grammy op. Een aantal nummers van de plaat prijkten een jaar later op de soundtrack van de film ‘Cool Runnings’.
