Liu Sola (CN)

She is an award-winning writer and a world- renowned music composer and vocalist. Her best - selling novella You Have no Choice, won the 1988 Chinese national novella award. Her work has been selected for study by the universities and high school literature classes since 1985.  She created the first Chinese rock opera Blue Sky Green Sea with a libretto based on her own award-wining novella of the same name in 1987, and recorded the Chinese blues song “Reborn” with Memphis blues musicians in 1989. Her novel Chaos & All That  (Hawaii U Press) was written in London 1989, while  Small Tales of the Great Ji Family  - (translated into French as: La grande île des tortues-cochons  from SEUIL, Paris, and into Italian as La Piccola Storia Della Grande Famiglia Ji from Einaudi , Rome)  - was written in New York 2000.  Her music albums include: Blues in the East, China Collage, Haunts and so on, but she has stopped recording music albums since 2000, to concentrate on creating a highly skilled Chinese Ensemble Liu Sola & Friends.  Since 2003, the Ensemble has performed worldwide. The world premier of Liu Sola’s new opera Fantasy of the Red Queen, performed by Ensemble Modern/Germany together with  Liu Sola & Friends Chinese ensemble, took place in May 2006. Liu Sola is the libretto and music composer, as well as the director and leading vocalist for the opera. This opera has been re-performed in Hong Kong, and will also be re-performed in Europe.
The world premier of her new chamber opera [The After Life of Li Jiantong] will take place in the Barbican Center, London, in may 2009.
