When the music is in your blood ... Dat is alleszins het geval bij Clayton Joseph (1957), de zoon van zydeco koning Clifton Chenier (1925-1987), de allereerste Creoolse muzikant die een Grammy won. C.J. groeide op in Port Arthur/Texas en had aanvankelijk vooral interesse in funk, soul en jazz. Hij studeerde muziek aan de Texas Southern University, zijn eerste instrumenten waren de piano, tenorsax en dwarsfluit. Op zijn 21e was hij afgestudeerd en werd hij saxofonist in pa’s Red Hot Louisiana Band. Zeven jaar later werd vader ziek, pas dan schakelde C.J. over naar accordeon. Nog eens twee jaar later overleed Clifton. Bij de pakken zitten was er niet bij en C.J. nam zijn verantwoordelijkheid en werd de nieuwe leider van de band, die tot op heden bestaat. Ondertussen had C.J. al drie albums opgenomen met Clifton. In ’88 verscheen op Arhoolie het eerste album van eigen hand. Ondertussen zijn dat er 8, waarvan 3 op Alligator. Uiteraard staan die vol upbeat zydeco, maar eentje wijkt af. Dat is zijn voorlaatste The Desperate Kingdom of Love, waar hij veeleer als een Zuiderse singer songwriter klinkt. Deze plaat werd opgenomen kort nadat de orkaan Katerina hard had toegeslagen, niet enkel in Louisiana maar ook in zijn thuishaven Port Arthur. In zo’n miserabele omstandigheden lukte het hem niet om vrolijke liedjes te schrijven. Met zijn laatste plaat Can’t Sit Down trad hij bijna in de voetsporen van zijn vader, de plaat werd genomineerd voor een Grammy. Een hele eer en jammer dat hij niet won, want anders ware het de eerste keer dat een vader en zijn zoon de meest prestigieuze music award wonnen. ‘t Kan nog komen. C.J. Chenier stond op de grootste festivals (New Orleans Jazz & Heritage, Chicago Blues, Montreal Jazz ...) en hij trad ook op tijdens de Katerina Benefit in Madison Square Garden/New York (the world’s most famous arena). Ook straf: toen Paul Simon in 1990 zijn plaat Rhythm of the Saints opnam, wou hij er een accordeonist bij. Eén adres. En, quizvraag, weet u wie er drumt op deze plaat? De Ringo! Hét Amerikaanse bluesblad Living Blues noemde C.J. simpelweg ‘the best living zydeco singer and accordeonist’. When the music is in your blood ...

When the music is in your blood… At least, that’s the case with Clayton Joseph (1957), the son of zydeco king Clifton Chenier (1925-1987), the biggest Creole musician who once won a Grammy. C.J. grew up in Port Arthur/Texas and originally loved funk, soul and jazz the most. He studied music at the Texas Southern University, his first instruments were piano, tenor sax and the flute. When he was 21, he graduated and became a saxophonist in his dad’s Red Hot Louisiana Band. Seven years later Clifton got sick and C.J. took up the accordion. Two years later his dad died. C.J. took his responsibility and became the new leader of the band. In the meantime C.J. had recorded three albums with Clifton. In 1988, the first album was released on Arhoolie. Today, there are 8 albums that are filled with upbeat zydeco. Only one album is different: The Desperate Kingdom of Love. That album was recorded shortly after hurricane Katrina struck, not only in Louisiana, but also in his hometown Port Arthur. In these miserable circumstances he was not able to write happy songs. With his last album Can’t Sit Down, he steps in his father’s footsteps: his album was nominated for a Grammy. A great honour, but sadly he did not win. Remarkable fact: when Paul Simon recorded his album Rhythm of the Saints in 1990, he wanted an accordionist on the album. Only one name comes to mind! The American bluegrass magazine Living Blues calls C.J. “the best living zydeco singer and accordionist”. When the music is in your blood…
