Ladies & gentlemen: uit Porte Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul) in het zuiden van Brazilië, hier is Renato Borghetti! Of Borghettinho, zoals hij door zijn fans liefdevol wordt benoemd. De meester van de gaita ponto, in het Nederlands de diatonische accordeon. De man bracht sinds 1984 23 albums uit, waarvan er slechts drie in Europa werden verspreid (zijn laatste Andanças werd trouwens in Brussel opgenomen, live bij Muziekpublique. De Nederlandse krant Het Parool verkoos de plaat tot album van het jaar 2011). Daarnaast zijn er ook drie DVD’s. In thuisland Brazilië is hij ronduit een ster en sinds een tiental jaar komt hij ook regelmatig naar Europa. Dat is nu opnieuw het geval, met concerten in Portugal, Oostenrijk, Luxemburg (in de prestigieuze Philharmonie, waar tickets 25 euro kosten) en Duitsland, waarna het kwartet nog even doorreist naar Israel. Er kon één Belgisch concert bij tussen twee concerten in Duitsland, een gaatje waar we gretig insprongen. En wel om volgende redenen. Muzikale natuurlijk, want het kwartet bestaat uitsluitend uit virtuozen, die met gemak elegant laveren tussen milonga, chacarera en chamamé, gekruid met elementen uit de jazz, tango en kamermuziek. De waar wordt live met veel humor gebracht (reden 2). Plus, Borghetti draagt het hart op de juiste plaats (reden 3). Hij stichtte vlak bij zijn eigen ranch (de man is een echte gaucho en ziet er met zijn lange haren, hoed en wijde broekspijpen ook zo uit) een Fabrica de Gaiteros, waar sinds eind 2010 diatonische accordeons worden gemaakt. Uiteraard met de bedoeling om deze te verkopen, maar ook als sociaal project waar achtergestelde kinderen en jongeren het instrument kunnen leren bespelen. Braziliaanse muziek = samba en bossa nova. Vergeet het, het immense land heeft muzikaal zo veel meer in petto en Borghetti bewijst dat met de plattelandsmuziek van zijn geboortstreek. Ergens lazen we: “Borghetti doet voor de gaucho muziek, wat Piazolla deed voor de tango”. En het klopt, hij voegt er Kunst (met hoofdletter) aan toe en zijn muziek is even universeel als die van de Argentijnse grootmeester (en wereldster). Borghetti was de eerste Braziliaan die ooit goud haalde voor een plaat met louter instrumentale muziek. Gauchos, zijn eerste Europese cd, ontving de ‘Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik’ en in 2005 werd zijn plaat Gaitoponto.Com genomineerd voor een Grammy Latino in de categorie Best Brazilian Roots/Regional Album. En sinds hij in 2009 geselecteerd werd voor een concert op de Womex-beurs (de grootste wereldmuziekbeurs ter wereld) is zijn internationale reputatie alleen maar gestegen. Ziezo, u weet genoeg, behalve dat fenomeen Borghetti begeleid wordt door Daniel Sa op gitaar, Vitor Peixoto op piano en Pedro Figueiredo op sax en fluit. Dit is het laatste N9-concert van het seizoen 2012-2013, maar geen nood, de zomer komt er al snel aan.

Borghetti is the master of the gaita ponto - the diatonic accordion. He released 23 albums since 1984, but only three were released in Europe (his last album Andancas was recorded in Brussels, live at Muziekpublique. The Dutch paper Het Parool chose the album as album of the year 2011). Next to the albums, there are also three dvd’s. In his homeland Brazil he is considered a star, and since ten years he frequently visits Europe. At the end of May he’s visiting again, with concerts in Portugal, Austria, Luxemburg (in the prestigious Philharmonie, where tickets cost 25 euros) and Germany, after which the quartet continues their trip to Israel. There was only room for one Belgian concert and we at N9 are very happy to present them. Why? Well, musically of course, because they are all musical virtuosos who easily switch between milonga, chacarera and chamamé, spiced up with jazz, tango and chamber music elements. Plus, Borghetti is a man of good character. He founded a Fabrica de Gaiteros, where diatonic accordions are made since 2010. To sell them of course, but also as a social project where subordinated children and young people can learn to play the instrument. Brazilian music = samba and bossa nova. Forget it, the big country has a lot more to offer and Borghetti proves this with is rural music from his native region. Borghetti was the first Brazilian who received gold for a merely instrumental album. Gauchos, his first European album, got the ‘Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkrtitik’ and in 2005 his album Gaitoponto.com was nominated for a Grammy Latino in the category Best Brazilian Roots/Regional Album. And since he was selected for a concert at the Womex exchange (the biggest world music exchange in the world), his international reputation has grown even more. So, this is about all you should know, except for the fact that Borghetti was accompanied by Daniel Sa on the guitar, by Vitor Peixoto on the piano and Pedro Figueiredo on sax and flute.
